South Africa: Variety is in our Nature.

South Africa has a winemaking tradition that dates back 350 years, yet it has only emerged as a global player since the advent of democracy in 1994.

Since then, the South African vineyards have gone from being 85% planted to white varieties to a more balanced 56% white. Complementing the new varieties, totally new areas such as Elgin, Elim, Walker Bay and the West coast are producing some of South Africa’s best wines. South Africa has expanded production cautiously, and today 102 000 hectares are planted to wine grapes.

Recognizing that they grow their vines in one of the most ecologically sensitive places on the planet, our farmers have put over 110 000 hectares of land on their farms into conservation status to safeguard the incredible biodiversity of our natural habitat. We believe that growing our vines in harmony with our environment gives our wines an intensity and purity of flavour.

Our export success has been significant, with 400 million litres exported in 2009, from less than 50 million in 1994.
