New Zealand Wine - Pure Discovery
Tucked away in the South West pacific, 1600 km from the nearest land mass, are the two narrow islands comprising New Zealand - a place of unspoiled landscapes, exotic flora and fauna and a culture renowned for its spirit of youthful innovation.
New Zealand’s wine-growing regions extend 1600km, from the sub-tropical north to the mountainous south, enabling an array of grape varieties to flourish. The maritime climate (nowhere is more than 130km inland) enhances the fruit-driven intensity for which our wines are renowned. Our aim is to be internationally recognised as the leading producer of highly distinctive, premium quality wines. New Zealand sets the benchmark internationally for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and is gaining growing recognition for Chardonnay, aromatic styles and red blends.
In 2009 New Zealand exported 113 million litres of wine, export value rose 24% to $992 million, reflecting the fact that for the first time in history the industry had sufficient inventory to supply the key international markets. In 2009 the producing area was 31,057 hectares.
In 2007 New Zealand Winegrowers set the goal for 100% of wine to be produced under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand or other accredited sustainable, organic or biodynamic programmes by 2012. Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) promotes best practice in water usage, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity.
We are on track to achieving the 100% sustainable production target by 2012.
